Hymn Selections: Trinity V, VI, VII, VIII, and IX

Hymn numbers are from The Hymnal 1982.

Trinity V:

388 O Worship the King
408 Sing Praise to God, Who Reigns Above
550 Jesus Calls Us, O'er the Tumult
437 Tell Out, My Soul

The tune for hymn #550 is Restoration, from The Southern Harmony. It's a personal favorite of mine. I prefer the "alternative accompaniment for unison singing" that is on the opposite page in the spiral bound accompanist copy of the hymnal. The version on the left page, with the text, is designed for 4-part vocals, and has a more open harmonic feel (some of the thirds of chords are left out). The version on the right fills in the thirds, and doesn't have so many moving parallel intervals and large stretches, which is more comfortable to play.

Trinity VI:

493 O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing
467 Sing My Soul, His Wondrous Love
542 Christ Is the World's True Light
296 We Know That Christ Is Raised

Hymn #296 is an excellent selection for the gospel text of the morning (and probable sermon topic), Romans 6:3-11. Both the passage and the hymn focus on our spiritual death and resurrection with Christ through baptism.

Trinity VII:

495 Hail, Thou Once Despised Jesus
516 Come Down, O Love Divine
460 Alleluia, Sing to Jesus
472 Hope of the World

Hymn #472 is a beautiful hymn in minor. I discovered it through the Scriptural Index to the Hymnal 1982 (discussed in this post). If you are not familiar with this hymn, now is a good time to learn it! The melody is interesting and unusual (and admittedly not very intuitive), so you will need to work with your congregation to help them be comfortable singing it. Here are some ideas for how to do that!

Trinity VIII:

427 When Morning Guilds the Skies
397 Now Thank We All Our God
663 The Lord My God My Shepherd Is
437 Tell Out, My Soul

Trinity IX

414 God My King, Thy Might Confessing
404 We Will Extol You
321 My God, Thy Table Now Is Spread
620 Jerusalem, My Happy Home
